CARILLON IN TOWER

ABMC CEMETERY MARGRATEN

September 14, 1994

The original remarks from former NAIL chairman Leo J. Schijven at the reveal of the carillon at ABMC Cemetery Margraten.

On behalf of the Board of the Netherland America Institute Limburg, I have the distinct honor of representing the members of our association as we commemorate the events that took place 50 years ago in this region of the Netherlands.

We are here to pay respect to the memory of the American men and women, and to al the people form many other nationalities like the British, the Canadians, the Polish, the Belgians and the Dutch, represented here today by their Ambassadors and other officials. These men and women fought so valiantly and died for our cause, so that we, the living, could build our future, realize our dreams and enjoy our lives in freedom, in the knowledge that the world would be safe for democracy to blossom.

We are here to recall that The Netherlands once knew tyranny and suffering. Yet, in spite of the evil forces which haunted Europe 50 years ago., justice has triumphed and, in thee process, strong democratic institutions have been established.

Looking back at what has been accomplished since that dark period in history, we can be proud of our efforts and at the success of The Netherlands and its neighbors in rejecting hate, intolerance and destruction.

We have come a long way since 1944. We were able to overcome great odds because we carried the strength of our convictions with us. We also carried the strong universal, ideals of freedom and justice. By the nature of this gathering it is obvious that we still harbor and cherish these beliefs.

As we look toward the next century, 50 and 100 years in the future, we hope that even greater strides will be made by nations in securing democracy.

I am happy and proud to be here, to be counted among the many people who not want to forget the heroic sacrifices made by so many young men and women. The Netherlands and Limburg will not forger the sacrifices and dedications of these heroes. We will forever remain grateful.

The Amvet Memorial Carillon, which is about to be dedicated will remind us that we should not forget.

Because we must NEVER forget.

God bless you all and thank you.
